I got the particles to show up, but they're still not quite right. Only some of the particles ended showing up in the scene. Also the timing is all off now... :(

I remember having discussions a while back about textures for those columns. I'm not sure where you got the images from, but the final version turned out nicely. So, now why did the addition of the particles throw everything off?
Since I have never used Maya before, I learned a lot of things while doing this project. However, most of what I learned was what not to do. The biggest problem was that I made the project too big. The geometry was constructed bigger then what it needed to be and after I applied the particles the program/computer became over whelmed. The timing ended up being thrown off because of the complexity. Also during the final rendering phases, Maya skipped over rendering out the particles because they exceeded the program's capabilities. The only way to fix this is to make everything smaller in size. To do that I have to start over from the very beginning, from scratch. I am in the process of doing that. More to come in the near future...
Please tell me you're not redoing the entire piece for class. Considering the sheer scope of this project, I'd say the render in it current state should more than satisfy your professors. By the way, when do classes get going in fall? I'll probably be joining you...
